Star Anise A common flavoring in cough medicines, North Indian and Chinese food, and sweets, star anise is grown almost exclusively in southern China, Indo-China, and Japan. It is used as a spice in preparation of Indian biryani and is a component in the North Indian spice blend garam masala. Star anise has been used as a tea in Traditional Chinese medicine, and the seeds are sometimes chewed after meals to aid digestion. As a warm and moving herb, star anise was also used traditionally to support cold-stagnation and joint issues.
