Featuring the music of Red Leaf Takoja as it travelled the powwow highway from Denver to Taos to Rosebud, South Dakota in the spring and summer of 1990 and 1991. “Song of the Heartbeat” is a unique, singer’s eye view of the powwow, of one of the most vibrant and simultaneously least appreciated (by non-Indian society) elements of contemporary Native American life – music, deftly woven as a montage of sound, color and heartfelt expressions of enthusiasm from singers, dancers, spectators and Native elders.
