A common flavoring in cough medicines, North Indian and Chinese food, and sweets, star anise is grown almost exclusively in southern China, Indo-China, and Japan. It is used as a spice in preparation of Indian biryani and is a component in the North Indian spice blend garam masala.

Star anise has been used as a tea in Traditional Chinese medicine, and the seeds are sometimes chewed after meals to aid digestion. As a warm and moving herb, star anise was also used traditionally to support cold-stagnation and joint issues.

Plants were the first medicine used by human beings and remain effective tools in caring for one’s own health but FDA regulations don’t allow any specific claims about how herbs may help you.
